Artist Statement
In this body of work, I explore a modern relationship with religion through interpreting the style of Ancient Greek pottery into a contemporary context by constructing an altar to the Gods Apollo, Hecate and Aphrodite. I reflect on the personal aspect of worship; the idea that as people we follow religion in our own individual way. Developing a unique approach to worship and the practice of religion, a more natural and meaningful relationship with the Gods develops. This contrasts to the awkward and formal relationships we have following traditional, prescriptive based practices to a tee. In a modern world, at times, we can feel disconnected from the Gods we worship; however, they always find a way to show us they are still present in our lives. When we adapt religious practices to our everyday, the Gods reassure us that they approve of our approach to worship and to life. It is tha act of worship and offering that is the key, rather than the rewards received as a show of ‘correctness’.
